About My Dress

Pattern Used:
A commercial pattern

Fabrics Used:
Tessuti Linen - Linda Natural; Poly/Cotton Lace; Satin Bias Binding

Time To Create:
15 ish hours - there was a considerable amount of handsewing!

Dress Influenced By:
Influences came from a vintage pattern book bought as a gift, a book on Horrockses dresses, the radness which is Mad Men. Luckily, "Lady-Like '60s" is set to be a trend this summer, using cinched waists, circle skirts and below the knee cuts. It's already been seen in the collections of Louis Vuitton and Prada, among others.

Additional Information:
The fabric was of such beautiful quality that I took extra care with this particular dress and did a lot more hand sewing than was required. I felt the beautiful fabric deserved the extra attention.

My Experience:
I learnt to sew in Year 7 design and technology class. The shorts were probably the most hideous thing every created by a thirteen year old, but I managed to get past this and spend the rest of high school sewing class making an endless amount of patchworked things. It was only after I finished school that I started making clothes. These were mostly costumes, as I figured that it didn't matter if too much went wrong. The things I made didn't make people run away screaming in fear, so I ventured into making 'real' clothes. (This was also a result of my increased poverty, a symptom of being a university student). These days, my handmade dresses are what fills my wardrobe. I have no formal training, just the remembered lessons from an awesome high school sewing teacher.

My Sewing Goals:
I would love to start running workshops teaching people how to sew. I've run lessons with my beautiful friends and they are always amazed at how easy sewing is, and how well things turn out. Running a Blue Mountains Brown Owls group would be awesome! I'm also starting to play around with pattern making. It's a new area for me, and I am looking forward to the challenge!
